A two-year program leading to a certificate in technical agriculture was first offered in 1959. The following year the Iowa State Technical Institute was established to provide two-year training courses for technical programs offered in three areas: construction technology, electronics technology, and mechanical technology. In 1963, chemical industries technology was added to the engineering technologies program. In 1967, the technical agriculture program was merged into the institute and , in the same year, the food service management program was initiated. The Technical Agriculture program was dropped when the Farm Operations Program was initiated (see 9/8). Each program was administered by the appropriate college. Graduates received an associate degree. The Institute was phased out in 1973.
