Scope and Content

This collection consists primarily of financial materials related to the operation of a coal mine and the sale of coal between the years of 1933 and 1940: banking, insurance, sales, regulatory, and tax information. Correspondence of various kinds, along with several ledgers and notebooks detailing income, expenses, and weight of shipments, constitute the bulk of the materials.

Incoming correspondence in this collection includes materials from: the Department of the Interior's Bituminous Coal division (a regulatory agency concerned with market prices paid to coal producers) and National Bituminous Coal Commission; the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service and Social Security Administration; state government agencies such as the Iowa State Mine Inspector, the Unemployment Compensation Commission, and the Tax Commission.

This collection also contains two booklets detailing the 1937-1939 and 1939-1941 agreements between the Iowa Coal Operators Association and District 13, United Mine Workers Association.

Biography/Profile

The Spring Hill Coal company of Spring Hill, Warren County, Iowa, operated a coal mine in or around the town of Spring Hill. The mine closed in 1940 after an unknown period of operation, possibly beginning as early as 1914. The donor of these records, Mrs W.A. Adams, had been the bookkeeper for the company for the final two years of its operation, and this donation was made to Iowa State University through her daughter, Mrs Gordon Kauffman, in 1970.

Abstract

The Spring Hill Coal Company, Spring Hill, Warren County, Iowa, closed in 1940. The records in this collection cover only the last few years of its operation. Although the worsening financial position of the company is clearly revealed in these documents, the absence of outgoing correspondence or other explicative materials makes it difficult to assess the reasons behind the failure of the mine.
